Memorabilia of the Month!

Cowboy All-Star,  Jim Kiick!

When you stop by the Brown & Gold for your next shopping trip keep your eyes peeled for our memorabilia displayed of the power-house Jim Kiick.  An autographed football helmet is displayed near the front entrance on a shelf just above the restroom on the upper level and an autographed picture of Kiick donning the famous number 21 in his cowboy uniform hangs on the column to the left of the register on the top level of the store.

James Forrest Kiick was born August 9, 1946 in Lincoln Park, New Jersey.  Jim's father, George Kiick had been a running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1940-1945.  Born a natural athlete Jim played football, baseball, and basketball at Boonton High School.  He made All-Morris County as a defensive back.  Kiick then journeyed to Laramie, Wyoming to begin his incredible career as a running back for the University of Wyoming Cowboys.

Kiick played for the Wyoming Cowboys from 1965 through 1967.  He was the first player ever to earn first team All-Western Athletic conference honors three times.  He was Wyoming's leading rusher for three consecutive seasons and led the Cowboys to WAC titles and two bowl appearances.

Kiick rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns during the Sun Bowl against Florida, where the Cowboys held off the Indians 28-20 in a unique battle sure to go down in Wyoming and Sun Bowl history.  He earned the Sun Bowl's Most Valuable Player honor that year.  As a senior, Kiick was selected as co-captain for one of the finest Cowboys teams of all-time.  Wyoming was ranked fifth in the nation and became the only team in WAC history to be invited to a New Year's Day bowl game, the 1968 Sugar Bowl, where they would lose to LSU 20-13.

After his collegiate career Kiick was drafted by the American Football League's Miami Dolphins in the 1968 Common Draft.  Although Kiick was not blessed with breakaway speed, he was a versatile player.  He was an effective inside power runner and was also an excellent blocker and clutch pass receiver.  He had over 1,000 yards combined rushing and receiving in each of his first four years in the AFL.

Kiick had a "never give up attitude," playing games with a broken toe, a broken finger, a hip pointer and a badly bruised elbow.  Playing injured was nothing new to the determined Miami star.  Kiick led the Dolphins in rushing in 1968 and 1969, and was selected for the AFL All-Star game both years.  Kiick played in Super bowls, VI, VII, and VIII.

Kiick was elevated to celebrity status in his professional football years.  He and Dolphins fullback Larry Csonka were known as "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," and in 1973 co-wrote a book together.

In 1974 Kiick and Csonka shocked the sports world when they signed with the World Football League.  In 1975 Kiick, Csonka, and another teammate played for the Memphis Southmen of the World Football League.  In October of 1975, just twelve games into an eighteen-game schedule, the league failed.  Kiick led the Southmen in touchdowns, action points, and points scored.  Following his brief detour to the WFL, Kiick played for the Denver Broncos and the Washington Redskins before retiring in 1977.

Since his memorable years playing college and professional football Kiick has settled down in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. Kiick was named to the University of Wyoming's Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.  He will forever be remembered by Wyoming fans as one of the best running-back's in Cowboy football history.
